2024 International Roadcheck

Ensuring safety on our roads is paramount in the trucking industry. To do so, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) conducts the annual International Roadcheck event to promote safety on the highways. This year’s event will take place May 14-16. Below is everything you need to know about International Roadcheck and how to prepare for it.

What is the CVSA International Roadcheck?

This event is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world. Conducted by CVSA-certified inspectors across North America, this event aims to improve commercial vehicle safety and compliance. During the 72-hour timeframe, inspectors conduct thorough inspections on commercial vehicles to ensure drivers are meeting safety standards.

2024 Focus Areas

In addition to regular inspections, there are also specific areas of focus for the International Roadcheck each year. These are determined based on current trends and concerns within the industry. This year’s focus areas include:

Tractor Protection Systems

The tractor projection system consists of the tractor protection valve, trailer supply valve and anti-bleed back valve. During the inspection of tractor protection system, the inspector will:

  • Ensure the wheel chocks are still in place and have the driver release all the brakes by pressing dash valves
  • Have the driver carefully remove the gladhands and allow air to escape
  • Ensure the air stops leaking from the supply line with at least 20 psi remaining
  • Listen and/or feel for any leaking air at the gladhand couplers on the trailer
  • Request a full-service brake application by the driver
  • Listen and/or feel for leaks from both air lines

Alcohol and controlled substance possession

Controlled substance and alcohol possession by commercial motor vehicle drivers is a significant concern. In addition, according to the CVSA, the number of prohibited drivers in the U.S. Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (DACH) is increasing. This alarming trend is a threat to all motorists on our roadways. While checking for the presence of alcohol or controlled substances during an inspection, inspectors will also:

  • Observe the driver for signs of alcohol or controlled substance use and/or impairment
  • Examine the cab and trailer for alcohol or controlled substances
  • Conduct a query in the DACH to ensure drivers are not in prohibited status

Preparation Tips for Drivers and Carriers

To ensure a smooth inspection process and avoid violations, drivers and carriers should prepare by:

  • Conducting pre-trip inspections before hitting the road, thoroughly inspecting vehicles for any potential issues with brakes, lights, tires and other components.
  • Reviewing records to ensure all necessary documents, including driver licenses, registration, insurance and permits, are up to date and readily available.
  • Ensuring you are following hours-of-service requirements to prevent fatigue-related accidents or violations.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility, and together, we can ensure safer roadways for all. Book a service appointment at your local MHC dealer to ensure you’re road ready and compliant.
